The Legal System in Japan

The Constitution of Japan, which makes up Japan’s legal system, designates the separation of three powers: Legislative, Judicial and Executive power. The Japanese court system is often thought to be simpler than that of other nations as it is not a federal system. In the 1880s and 1890s, Japan implemented the ‘roppo’, or ‘six codes’ defining Civil, Criminal and Commercial laws in the country, these remain although they have been amended. Japanese commercial law is characterised by an association with the bureaucracy that is important in determining how business in Japan is conducted.
